Dominant groups

Analysis of the household/family types in Victoria in 2021 compared to Australia shows that there was a higher proportion of couple families with child(ren) as well as a similar proportion of one-parent families. Overall, 30.9% of total families were couple families with child(ren), and 10.2% were one-parent families, compared with 29.7% and 10.5% respectively for Australia.

There were a higher proportion of lone person households and a lower proportion of couples without children. Overall, the proportion of lone person households was 24.7% compared to 24.2% in Australia while the proportion of couples without children was 24.6% compared to 25.4% in Australia.

Emerging groups

The number of households in Victoria increased by 265,341 between 2016 and 2021.

The largest changes in family/household types in Victoria between 2016 and 2021 were:

  • Lone person (+97,718 households)
  • Couples without children (+79,425 households)
  • Couples with children (+71,597 households)
  • One parent families (+28,740 households)
