In 2021, the largest age group in Greater Sydney was 30 to 34 year olds. The group that changed the most since 2016 was 35 to 39 year olds, increasing by 26,962 people.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the male five year age groups of Greater Sydney in 2021 compared to Victoria shows that there was a similar proportion of males in the younger age groups (under 15) and a lower proportion of males in the older age groups (65+).

Overall, 19.2% of the male population was aged between 0 and 15, and 14.1% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 18.8% and 15.7% respectively for Victoria.

There were no major differences between Greater Sydney and Victoria in 2021.

Emerging groups

From 2016 to 2021, Greater Sydney's male population increased by 208,460 people (8.8%). This represents an average annual population change of 1.7% per year over the period.

The largest changes in male age structure in this area between 2016 and 2021 were in the age groups:

  • 35 to 39 (+26,962 males)
  • 70 to 74 (+21,316 males)
  • 10 to 14 (+20,734 males)
  • 60 to 64 (+16,446 males)
