CAD East had a similar proportion of pre-schoolers and a lower proportion of persons at post retirement age than City of Adelaide in 2016.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the service age groups of CAD East in 2016 compared to City of Adelaide shows that there was a lower proportion of people in the younger age groups (0 to 17 years) as well as a lower proportion of people in the older age groups (60+ years).

Overall, 4.3% of the population was aged between 0 and 17, and 13.7% were aged 60 years and over, compared with 6.7% and 17.5% respectively for City of Adelaide.

The major differences between the age structure of CAD East and City of Adelaide were:

  • A larger percentage of 'Tertiary education and independence (18 to 24)' (38.6% compared to 27.3%)
  • A smaller percentage of 'Older workers and pre-retirees (50 to 59)' (6.2% compared to 9.6%)
  • A smaller percentage of 'Parents and homebuilders (35 to 49)' (12.0% compared to 15.3%)
  • A smaller percentage of 'Empty nesters and retirees (60 to 69)' (7.2% compared to 9.4%)

Emerging groups

From 2011 to 2016, CAD East's population increased by 453 people (19.5%). This represents an average annual population change of 3.62% per year over the period.

The largest changes in the age structure in this area between 2011 and 2016 were in the age groups:

  • Tertiary education and independence (18 to 24) (+212 people)
  • Young workforce (25 to 34) (+91 people)
  • Empty nesters and retirees (60 to 69) (+59 people)
