The City of Adelaide's occupation statistics quantify the occupations in which the residents work (which may be within the residing area or elsewhere). This will be influenced by the economic base and employment opportunities available in the area, education levels, and the working and social aspirations of the population. When viewed with other indicators, such as Educational Qualifications and Individual Income, Occupation is a key measure for evaluating the City of Adelaide's socio-economic status and skill base.

Dominant groups
An analysis of the jobs held by the female resident population in City of Adelaide in 2021 shows the three most popular occupations were:
- Professionals (2,186 females or 36.1%)
- Community and Personal Service Workers (1,052 females or 17.4%)
- Clerical and Administrative Workers (963 females or 15.9%)
In combination these three occupations accounted for 4,201 females in total or 69.4% of the employed female resident population.
In comparison, Greater Adelaide employed 27.4% in Professionals; 18.7% in Community and Personal Service Workers; and 19.8% in Clerical and Administrative Workers.
The major differences between the jobs held by the female population of the City of Adelaide and Greater Adelaide were:
- A larger percentage of females employed as Professionals (36.1% compared to 27.4%)
- A smaller percentage of females employed as Clerical and Administrative Workers (15.9% compared to 19.8%)
- A smaller percentage of females employed as Labourers (4.2% compared to 6.8%)
- A smaller percentage of females employed as Sales Workers (8.4% compared to 10.4%)
Emerging groups
The number of employed females in City of Adelaide increased by 1,636 between 2016 and 2021.
The largest changes in the occupations of female residents between 2016 and 2021 in the City of Adelaide were for those employed as:
- Professionals (+547 females)
- Community and Personal Service Workers (+372 females)
- Clerical and Administrative Workers (+213 females)
- Managers (+176 females)
