Dominant groups

Analysis of the language used at home by the population of CAD East in 2021 compared to the City of Adelaide shows that there was a smaller proportion of people who used English only, and a larger proportion of those using a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).

Overall, 42.5% of the population used English only, and 49.2% used a non-English language, compared with 55.9% and 35.9% respectively for the City of Adelaide.

The dominant language used at home, other than English, in CAD East was Mandarin, with 21.9% of the population, or 802 people using this language at home.

The major differences between the languages used at home for the population of CAD East and the City of Adelaide in 2021 were:

  • A larger percentage using Mandarin at home (21.9% compared to 13.7%)
  • A larger percentage using Cantonese at home (5.3% compared to 3.3%)

Emerging groups

Between 2006 and 2021, the number of people who used a language other than English at home increased by 1,271 or 238.0%, and the number of people who used English only increased by 885 or 131.3%.

The largest changes in the languages used by the population in CAD East between 2006 and 2021 were for those using:

  • Mandarin (+640 persons)
  • Cantonese (+117 persons)
  • Vietnamese (+82 persons)
  • Hindi (+65 persons)
