Dominant groups

Analysis of the language used at home by the population of CAD East in 2021 compared to South West Overlay shows that there was a smaller proportion of people who used English only, and a larger proportion of those using a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).

Overall, 42.5% of the population used English only, and 49.2% used a non-English language, compared with 52.9% and 41.2% respectively for South West Overlay.

The dominant language used at home, other than English, in CAD East was Mandarin, with 21.9% of the population, or 802 people using this language at home.

The major differences between the languages used at home for the population of CAD East and South West Overlay in 2021 were:

  • A larger percentage using Mandarin at home (21.9% compared to 16.7%)
  • A larger percentage using Cantonese at home (5.3% compared to 3.7%)
  • A larger percentage using Hindi at home (2.1% compared to 1.0%)

Emerging groups

Between 2016 and 2021, the number of people who used a language other than English at home increased by 379 or 26.6%, and the number of people who used English only increased by 508 or 48.3%.

The largest changes in the languages used by the population in CAD East between 2016 and 2021 were for those using:

  • Mandarin (+146 persons)
  • Vietnamese (+68 persons)
  • Hindi (+58 persons)
  • Arabic (-57 persons)
