This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.

When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Derived from the two Census questions:

'What best describes the business of your employer?' and 'What are the main goods produced or main services provided by your employers business?'

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in Upper North Adelaide in 2016 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (372 people or 17.9%)
  • Education and Training (257 people or 12.3%)
  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (253 people or 12.2%)

In combination, these three industries employed 882 people in total or 42.4% of the total employed resident population.

In comparison, the City of Adelaide employed 14.8% in Health Care and Social Assistance; 11.1% in Education and Training; and 12.1% in Professional, Scientific and Technical Services.

The major differences between the jobs held by the population of Upper North Adelaide and the City of Adelaide were:

  • A larger percentage of persons employed in health care and social assistance (17.9% compared to 14.8%)
  • A larger percentage of persons employed in manufacturing (5.2% compared to 3.7%)
  • A larger percentage of persons employed in education and training (12.3% compared to 11.1%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in accommodation and food services (10.1% compared to 12.8%)

Emerging groups

The number of employed people in Upper North Adelaide decreased by 174 between 2011 and 2016.

There were no major differences in Upper North Adelaide between 2011 and 2016.
