Dominant groups

Analysis of the household/family types in the City of Adelaide in 2021 compared to Greater Adelaide shows that there was a lower proportion of couple families with child(ren) as well as a lower proportion of one-parent families. Overall, 8.0% of total families were couple families with child(ren), and 4.5% were one-parent families, compared with 28.6% and 11.3% respectively for Greater Adelaide.

There were a higher proportion of lone person households and a similar proportion of couples without children. Overall, the proportion of lone person households was 40.8% compared to 26.8% in Greater Adelaide while the proportion of couples without children was 25.6% compared to 25.3% in Greater Adelaide.

Emerging groups

The number of households in City of Adelaide increased by 7,259 between 1991 and 2021.

The largest changes in family/household types in the City of Adelaide between 1991 and 2021 were:

  • Lone person (+2,876 households)
  • Couples without children (+2,202 households)
