Dominant groups

Analysis of the male service age groups of the City of Sydney in 2021 compared to Paddington shows that there was a lower proportion of males in the younger age groups (0 to 17 years) as well as a lower proportion of males in the older age groups (60+ years).

Overall, 8.3% of the male population was aged between 0 and 17, and 13.3% were aged 60 years and over, compared with 13.5% and 17.3% respectively for Paddington.

The major differences between the male age structure of the City of Sydney and Paddington were:

  • A larger percentage of 'Young workforce' (31.5% compared to 24.1%)
  • A larger percentage of 'Tertiary education & independence' (10.7% compared to 7.6%)
  • A smaller percentage of 'Older workers & pre-retirees' (10.4% compared to 13.8%)
  • A smaller percentage of 'Secondary schoolers' (1.9% compared to 4.7%)

Emerging groups

From 2016 to 2021, City of Sydney's male population increased by 2,772 people (2.6%). This represents an average annual population change of 0.51% per year over the period.

The largest changes in the male age structure in this area between 2016 and 2021 were in the age groups:

  • Tertiary education and independence (18 to 24) (-4,246 males)
  • Parents and homebuilders (35 to 49) (+2,955 males)
  • Seniors (70 to 84) (+1,511 males)
  • Older workers and pre-retirees (50 to 59) (+1,015 males)
