The Year of Arrival data records when the overseas born population arrived in Australia. The data shows the degree to which areas are 'ports' for new overseas arrivals and reveals the role of the City of Sydney in housing newer or older migrant groups. When looking at those speaking a language other than English this will tend to exclude those from English speaking countries, and may indicate whether the languages are used by recent migrants, older migrants, or 2nd or 3rd generation Australians.

Dominant groups
Analysis of the year of arrival for the overseas born Thai speaking population of the City of Sydney in 2021 compared to Greater Sydney shows that there was a smaller proportion of people who arrived before 2010, and a larger proportion of recent overseas arrivals (those who arrived between 2016 and 2021).
Overall, 31.6% of the overseas born Thai speaking population arrived before 2010, and 36.9% arrived during or after 2016, compared with 49.6% and 24.4% respectively for Greater Sydney.
The major differences between the year of arrival data of the Thai speaking population of the City of Sydney and Greater Sydney were:
- A larger percentage of arrivals between 2016 to Aug 2021 (36.9% compared to 24.4%)
- A larger percentage of arrivals between 2011 to 2015 (28.7% compared to 23.4%)
- A smaller percentage of arrivals between 1991 to 2000 (4.5% compared to 11.6%)
- A smaller percentage of arrivals between 1981 to 1990 (1.6% compared to 6.3%)
